Project Description

HEPARIN RED

APPLICATION

Heparin Red® is a synthetic fluorescent probe that changes intensity when interacting with heparin. Supplied by our partners Redprobes in Germany the Heparin Red® technology is available as two kits:
1. The Heparin Red® Kit for quantification of heparin in human plasma
2. Heparin Red® Ultra for quantification of heparin in crude heparin extraction.

DESCRIPTION

The Heparin Red® Kit measures “chemical” heparin in blood plasma at concentrations in µg/mL, not the effect of heparin on the clotting cascade [1].

Additionally, the Kit is developing into a tool for pharmacokinetic studies of non-anticoagulant heparins [2], a class of chemicals with enormous promise for future drug therapies.

CONVENIENT – mix-and-read fluorescence assay for microplates
SENSITIVE – quantification down to low µg/mL with detection of heparins in only 20 µL plasma
VERSATILE – detection of non-anticoagulant heparins and other sulphated polysaccharides
QUALITY – robust, protein-free reagents

Heparin Red® Ultra

Heparin Red® Ultra is a simple and easy to use assay for measuring chemical heparin in complex matrices

The 2008 heparin adulteration crisis highlighted the need for a rapid, reliable method for screening raw heparin extractions – the Heparin Red® Ultra kit meets this need. The kit is ideal for testing heparin concentrations in crude animal extracts, and so will be of significant value to the heparin manufacturing industry [1].

The assay measures “chemical” heparin concentrations in µg/mL, not the effect of heparin on the clotting cascade. Heparin Red® Ultra was reported to suppress interference by nucleic acids and detect heparin in urine [1].

In the publication, we only speculate about the application for crude animal extracts but have not used such samples, we have used “model solutions” that contain heparin spikes instead.

CONVENIENT – mix-and-read fluorescence assay for microplates
SENSITIVE – small sample volumes with quantification in the low µg/mL range
QUALITY – robust, protein-free consistent reagents
